Biophilic
exploration of the sublime
Artist statement by Melissa Fletcher
May 2014
Using found images and personal archives of the sublime, my
work focuses on our biophilic relationship with the natural world. I believe
what seems like chaos and randomness on our planet actually has structure,
codes and pattern. Our world, from galactic to microscopic, all share in these
patterns - and we are a part of it.
By hand cutting physical collage, my work signifies the
uniqueness and self-similarities found in nature. Furthermore, I create
moving collage by intuitively constructing geometric
structures and instinctively match these structures to their
environmental plains.
Infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, yet eternal and peaceful; the
sublime in nature provokes an emotional and spiritual reaction within us. Like the
poet William Wordsworth, I use the sublime in nature as a way of seeking
enlightenment. The more I study nature documentaries and are continuously amazed
by molecular science, the more I see how life is so finely tuned and perfected
with its ever repeated patterns. We, and life itself cannot be here purely by
chance.
